Fire Emergency Response Safety Initiative Talking Points
- The health and safety of our employees and campus community is of the utmost importance at all times at UCLA.
- Maintaining a safe, healthy and environmentally sound campus is not only critical, but a collaborative effort that calls for the full and accountable cooperation of every employee.
- When working with flammable or combustible material, we understand that accidents may happen.
- As a rule: EH&S and UCFD want any fire (described as an unexpected or uncontrolled flame) or explosion to be called in to 9-1-1, with no exceptions.
- Do not call EH&S in place of 9-1-1, they are not interchangeable.
- There is no penalty for calling 9-1-1.
- This practice will be considered standard and expected protocol going forward and is your responsibility as an employee of _________.
- Once 9-1-1 has come out and assessed the safety and situation, cleanup may begin if UCFD has cleared you to do so.
- If EH&S needs to be contacted, verify that UCFD will do so.
- Not only does calling 9-1-1 in every situation take the guesswork out of proper protocol, but it keeps all of us safe.
- It is a safety risk to not have emergency responders assessing the aftermath, as fires can spark back up and explosions can be followed by fire or additional explosions.
- It is also a compliance challenge since all fires, explosions, and fire extinguisher discharges must be reported to the State Fire Marshal’s Office within 8 hours of the event (see CAL/OSHA Title 8, section 342)
- If there is any reason that you may be afraid to call 911, please ask a colleague to do so, we cannot take a risk with campus safety or compliance.
- You will be seeing posters and other material for our “Not Done Until You Dial 9-1-1” campaign around your workspace. Please refer to the material and remember the three steps to handling a situation in a compliant manner:
- Extinguish, call 9-1-1, done
- Extinguish, call 9-1-1, done
- For more information about who to contact in a number emergency and non-emergency situations on campus, please refer to our “Who Do I Contact List” (hyperlink).
- We appreciate your cooperation with this initiative and look forward to reaching 100% reporting compliance in 2020.
